Cherry trees are one of th earliest fruit trees to ripen, in the past the trees where too large for most gardens, however they have been developed into smaller varietes.

There are 2 main groups to choose from and they are sweet cherries perfect for eating, or acidic cherries which are for cooking and making chutneys etc.

When to Plant Cherry Trees: The best time is autumn or winter.
When to Harvest Cherry Trees: Early summer

How to grow cherry trees:

Sweet cherry trees prefer a sunny position whereas acidic variaties will tolerate a shady position.

Ensure the soil is well draining as the tree produces shallow roots, which can be damaged or become diseased in water logged soils.

If you have limited space and can only plant 1 tree ensure it is a self pollinating variety, this will help ensure good crops.

Prune the trees annual to keep them undercontrol, it is also advisable to prune a few inches off when the fruits appear so that they have full sun to ripen.

How to harvest a cherry tree:

Cover may be required to protect the cherries from birds, who will snack on them, so netting is advisable.

Remove rippened cherries regularly as they have a tendency for the skin to split in heavy rain & wet conditions, this will ensure you get the maximum crops.

Water regularly when the first fruits start appearing.
