Grapes are often thought of as a plant that can only be grown abroad, in countries such as France. However you can grow grapes in the UK and use them for desert or wine making.
Planting and Siting Grapes:
Grapes need full sun so ensure you allow for this when choosing a site. Grapes require well drained soil, and to much organic matter can encourage lots of foilage growth at the expense of fruit growth.
Also bear in mind that there are 2 distinct grape type, wine grapes which can be grown outside however the fruit are more acidic, there are also desert grapes these need to be grown indoors either conservatory or greenhouses, these can be eaten and are sweeter.
Growing Grape Vines:
During the first year, remove some of the flowers so that the plant does not become over burdened with fruit.
Surpress weeds using mulch which will also help retain water.
Water new grape vines regularly during the first year, moving forward into the second year less frequent watering will be required.
Additional Tip: If you are planning to grow grapes to make your own wine, you will need appr 1 vine per bottle, each grape vine will require around 1.5meters square of space.
