Modern variaties of Plum trees mean that there is an increasing availability of self fertile plum trees that can be grown on their own in any sized garden of allotment.

How to grow plum trees:

Plum trees are thirsty trees and therefore prefer a clay or loamy soil type, however sites still need to be free draining as they do not like waterlogged ground.  If you are growing in any other soil type, add plenty of organic matter to improve its water retention ability and also mulch annually.

The trees will perform best if they are sitted in full sun, and if protected slightly from wind you will gain increased crop yields, because they fruit early high winds or frost can kill flowers reducing the crop yields.

Apply a mulch of well rotted manure mid spring along with plenty of organic chicken pellets.  This will greatly increase crop yields.

Only prune in spring or summer as pruning in autumn or winter can increase the chances of disease getting into the tree.

Harvesting plum trees:

Pick the fruits when they are ready, taking care not to bruise them.  Plums can be eaten fresh, and if you want to freeze them we recommend destoning the plums first.
