Spades are one of the essential pieces of equipment for any gardener so you must get one that can perform.
There are spades available for all budgets, ideally you would want to go for a stainless steal spade with a wooden handle, although these can be quite expensive.
Spades are relatively easy to maintain, they just need to be sharpened every few years and if you have a wooden handle you can apply wood preserve to keep it in good condition.
There are various sized heads for them, and I would suggest have 2 spades one with a narrower head which is ideal for digging trenches, the second a larger head for general use. If you are not that strong a smaller spade will also be easier for you to use.
