Beetroot, are relatively easy to grow, and can either be left to mature or picked when young. They are a great vegetable for storing, and can also be sown succesionally meaning a longer harvesting period.
When to Sow Beetroot: April to July
When to Harvest Beetroot: June to October
How to Grow Beetroot:
Sow in moduals or direct from mid april, when seedlings are 1inch they need to be thinned to leave 4 inch gaps between seedlings, however you can leave 2 inch gaps if you plan to harvest some early.
Cover if there are signs of frost as these will damage or kill the plants, also keep soil moist, preferrably by applying a mulch.
How to Harvest Beetroot:
First crops can be lifted from June. Harvest when the root is no bigger than a cricket ball, however for a delicious supply harvest alternative roots when they are golf ball size leaving the other to mature.
