Onions are many culinary dishes, and are a must have for most kitchens.  They are fairly easy to grow especially if grown from sets, although beware of birds.

When to sow onions: Late March to Early May
When to harvest onions: July

How to grow onions:

Sow onions depending on how large you want the onion to be, the closer together the smaller they will develop.  Aim for a minimum of 4 inches apart.

Plant by placing the onion set or bulb in a small drill whole app .5 inch under the soil so that the tip of the bulb is exposed from the soil.

Water occasionally if the weather is dry and keep weed free, it is also recommended to mulch as this will help retain water and keep the weeds down

Remove any flower spikes that might appear.

How to harvest onions:

In July the foilage will turn yellow, this is when they are ready to be harvested.  Gently lift from the ground with a fork.

Leave in the sun to allow the onions to dry out, only store those that are firm and disease free.
