Tomatoes are probably the most popular vegetable to grow, there are a multitude of variates from small cherry types to large beafsteak variates. They can be grown indoors or outdoors, although there are fewer outdoor varieties and the season and crop tend to be smaller.
When to sow Tomatoes: Jan to Mar (indoors) Mar to Apr (outdoors)
When to harvest Tomatoes: When tomatoes are visible ready
How to grow Tomatoes:
Tomatoes should be sown with a consistent temp or around 15c, sow in either module trays or small pots.
Transplant to larger pots (3inch) when 2 true leaves are visible.
If growing in pots use a minimum size of 12inch by 12inch.
When the first trusses (flowers) have developed start feeding the plant with a tomato fertiliser, also ensure that any side shoots are removed. Side shoots are branches growing of the joint of an existing branch with the stem of the plant.
How to harvest Tomatoes:
Pick the fruit when they are rip and fully coloured. When the season has ended any unrippened fruit can be picked and left to rippen alongside over fruits such as apples or bananas.
